The ASHRAE standard is published by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating
and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) and is updated once every three years. Although a United States federal
standard, it is up to the individual states to elect to enforce and adhere to it. Some states
do this automatically, some do it through a legislative process, and some states do not

The ASHRAE standard is not just for lighting; it includes recommendations and standards
for all power-consumption equipment, including HVAC, electrical, construction methods,
as well as lighting.

There are two ways to meet ASHRAE standards for lighting: the building area method
and the space-by-space method. In addition, the latest edition of ASHRAE 90.1
standard makes lighting controls mandatory in nearly all lighting applications. For more
